Last month, my buddy invited me out for drinks for a double date with two ladies at Mandrill bar in Lido. He sent me their photos and told me they could not speak English. I was initially nervous about being the only one who couldn't speak Chinese well, but remembered that breaking comfort zones are almost always a good thing.
And hell, it still sounded fun and I figured that drinks, good vibes, and the little Chinese I could speak would make things work out. At this point, my only expectations were for a night of drinks and hanging out with new people.
When we arrived, my buddy and I were hit with a surprise: in addition to the two girls, there was a third girl and three men, including one girl’s burly-sized brother.
The extra guys immediately dove into a mission of getting us drunk, demanding all men do bottoms-up on several full glasses of WINE. WTF! Everyone was talking and tipsy and I was in a situation where it would have been easy for me to be the odd man out. What I did was:
Acted like I belonged immediately, even though I couldn’t speak Chinese
Stayed involved as much as possible — luckily everyone there loved toasting for about every drink
Talking to everyone
Flirting using the little Chinese I could manage — mainly "Nǐ xǐhuān lǎowài ma" and "Nǐ hěn piàoliang." I wouldn't say this usually, but in a situations of good vibes, drinks, and the girls realizing we were both limited in communication, it didn't come off as too strong/weird and was somewhat jokingly.
At some point, the girl who I ended up talking to the most and whom I called "piaoliang" the most hit me with a kiss with her brother across the table. And as I always love a good thing, we instantly dove into an all-night makeout session.
I left that night happy for 3 reasons:
1. Going out despite the possible awkwardness of being the lone English speaker outside of my buddy.
2. Having a fun time and meeting an awesome girl.
3. That her brother and his bros left early that night without killing me.
